What olive leaf is
Olive leaf is simply the narrow, silvery-green leaf of the olive tree, Olea europaea. The tree is evergreen, so the leaves are always there, and growers gather them during pruning. They are dried and used as teas, extracts and powders.
The leaf tastes bitter and grassy, a close cousin of the sharp finish you notice in a good extra virgin olive oil. That bitterness is a clue to its polyphenol content, plant compounds the tree uses as its own defense.
Where it comes from and how it has been used
The olive tree is the signature plant of the Mediterranean basin, and it has been cultivated there for thousands of years. Olive groves in Greece, Italy, Spain, Turkey and North Africa have shaped both landscape and diet. While the fruit and oil became kitchen staples, the leaf was brewed by country households as a traditional herbal tea.
That Mediterranean setting matters here, and it is part of why olive leaf feels at home in a heart-wellness blend. The olive is bound up with the eating pattern many people look to for heart-friendly habits: vegetables, legumes, fish, whole grains and olive oil.
Polyphenols in plain language
Polyphenols are a large family of plant compounds. Olive leaf is a recognized source, with oleuropein often named as a signature one. In a supplement context, polyphenols are discussed for their antioxidant support, which lines up with the brand's positioning for HoneyVital®.
